Initially Monet was not keen but he did decide to travel. Hunter was a friend of Monet's wife, Alice, who invited the couple to come to visit her in Venice, where she rented this palazzo. This painting was undertaken on Monet's trip to Venice in the autumn of 1908, when the artist responded to an invitation from the American woman Mary Young Hunter, to visit her at the Palazzo Barbaro, in Venice. Previously it has been in the private collection of the New Orleans sugar magnate, Hunt Henderson, who was a noted art collector. Sotheby's called this painting "one of the most celebrated Venice paintings".
In 2015, it was sold for more than $35 million at an auction by Sotheby's. This painting is a classic view of the Grand Canal, an attempt to capture the ever-changing face of Venice, as seen from the Palazzo Barbaro, one of the places where he stayed during his trip. The paintings were begun en plein air and completed in France. The artist is generally regarded by art historians as being at the peak of his powers at this period.

This Grand Canal series is in turn part of a larger series of paintings of Venice which Monet undertook during 1908 on his only visit to the city. It is one of six paintings looking down the Grand Canal towards the Salute church. Le Grand Canal is an oil on canvas painting by French Impressionist painter Claude Monet (1840–1926). Monet’s depiction of it is all about the effects of light. San Giorgio Maggiore is a sanctuary and monastery off the coast of Italy. In October 1908, he began a series of preliminary works, including San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk. But when he arrived, he was so entranced by the sight of Venice, he had his painting materials sent to him.
While reluctant to paint the subject which had been painted so many times by other artists, he had not intended to create any paintings while staying in Venice. At age 68, Monet and his wife were invited to stay in Venice. San Giorgio Maggiore al Crepuscolo, which is also entitled Venice at Dusk, is one of Monet’s most famous paintings, in which he almost did not create. Monet believed in the strength of observation and painting colors observed, not the physical being. The philosophy of impressionism is based on expressing one’s perceptions or impressions of subject matter as opposed to mechanical, linear depictions.
